kamen listened before hissing. ''i do not need his help!'' he pushed him back with incedible force, he waited. he panted slightly, now filled with rage and grief. ''i can do this on my own...'' but he was unsure of his words.
nikky blinked. ''kamen....'' she said softly.

Kadaj braked to a stop, ending the slide in a crouch. "You do not need him..." He leaped back like a coiled spring, his sword leading the way in a powerful broadside slash aimed towards Kamen's head. Use the blunt side to knock him down, not take him out. "...yet you don't forsake him?"
Looks like my brother hasn't rusted a bit, Ami thought. Comfoting to know some things never change.

he couldn't block the blow. he slides and slowly gets up. ''i'm... afraid.'' he said quietly, not trying to go after his fallen sword.

Kadaj stood over his fallen opponent. This could be a trick, but I don't sense deception-- he may have learned to mask his intentions, but... he is telling the truth. I can feel his fear-- it's absolutely filling him.
He kept the blade aimed at Kamen's head. "Afraid? Of what?"
He waited for his curiosity to be satisfied. "That was not so great a challenge as I expected. A deal is a deal... you owe me the girl's soul. Free her-- and answer me." He nodded to Ami, who fetched the sword. No need to leave a loose weapon in the arena.

kamen looked away, he stayed silent for a long time before speking shakily. ''afraid... of what he would do to me. i have failed him so much already....'' he clenched his fist. ''this was my trial task... if i could bring nikky back... ''

Kadaj was silent. This tale was all too familiar to him.
"What more can he do... when your soul has already died?" Kadaj asked quietly. "Listen to me. Nothing you do for him will be enough. This master of yours will only take from you until there is nothing left. He will force you to live in Hell, and then die to go to Hell. You must believe me... I know."
He pulled back his sword... and offered the Puppeteer a hand. "Leave Nikky alone. She cannot save you. You can only save yourself."
Though he spoke in mercy, his eyes betrayed his caution. And if you are trying to play against the pain of my past, Transfer or no Transfer, you will die where you stand.

nikky blinked at the softness in him... it was strange... she had never seen it before.

"Is the girl free?" Kadaj countered, some of the hardness returning to his voice. "Prove she is free, and will remain so, or you go nowhere."
Ami looked on, smiling. This is the Kadaj I remember.

kamen closed his eyes and did something minor with his hands... he opened them and nodded. ''yes... and to prove it.'' he pulled out a knife and cut his hand. he bled but nikky was unharmed....
nikky frowned slightly, she could feel him any longer...

Kadaj was satisfied with this. "Fine..." He stepped back to let him go.
Ami stepped up and got in his way. "But let me ask you two questions before you leave-- one rhetorical and one inquisitive. What will happen to you now-- I ask rhetorically because we all know-- and is there any way of stopping it?"
Reno had stood dumbfounded at this entire display. "Ami, to think I credited you with a little more horse sense than your nutjob brothers. You're standing here telling this... this... LOSER that you want to HELP him?"
"I'm telling him I want to help US," Ami shot back. "When he goes back to his master, he'll be killed or else turned back to evil. Either way spells bad news for us, because this all means one thing-- Kamen's master wants Nikky even more badly than Kamen himself does."
Reno looked around at the assemblage around him. "All you people are nuts!" He got out his Electro Mag Rod and prepared to strike Kamen down with it.
"Reno, don't!" Ami caught his arm. "This won't help Nikky!" Her brothers moved in for support.
"I'm not going to risk losing her again!" Reno shouted back. He was shaking. "Not again."

kamen stared blankly, his eyes saddened now. he sighed. ''i do not know wat lies before me... '' he spoke quietly and stared at the ground. ''but i am of no use.... to any of you.''
nikky stepped forward. ''kamen....''
he pulled away from her. ''i am sorry... but i will not endanger anyone else... not for me.''

Reno got between him and Nikky, and there was not a trace of charity for this pathetic creature anywhere on his person. If not for the pity he'd seen in Nikky's eyes when she looked at this... man, this... thing, nothing would have held him back from striking him down.
"Get out," he ordered with gritted teeth.
Ami tried to protest, but one glance from Reno was enough to change her mind. She looked downward, knowing the argument to be lost before it was begun.
They cleared a path for Kamen leading out of the fort.
Ami organized her thoughts. Brothers, if you're listening... you know that unless we make this man an ally, he can always return as our enemy.
Kadaj gave a slightly perceptible nod. Yes... but now is not the time. This man must decide for himself whom he will serve, and we will one day face the consequences of his decision, for better or worse.
They watched him go as the fog began to thin.
Reno turned back to Nikky, concern written all over him. Is it really over? He searched her face for an answer.

nikky watched as kamen took a few steps and disappeared with the fog... her heart sank. she looked over at reno ad smiled slightly. ''that was brave of you... but do you think it was nescessary?'' she blinked, confused on why he was so angry.
kamen appeared some ways off and wandered... he didn't bother to retrieve his sword from them.

He took her hands. "Yes, it was," he told her, trying to make her understand. "He nearly killed you... he didn't give a d**n about you, he used you against us... and..." He didn't know how to make her understand. I'm surrounded by bleeding hearts here. "He nearly stole from me the only thing I love in the whole world, and that is a sin I can't just forgive." There was anger in his voice... and confusion, and fear... and love. Yes, there was some of that, too.
Ami looked at the new sword she bore. "Hmm... not a bad one. Maybe I'll keep it." She turned to her brothers with a grin... but they had already gone.
A cloud of green particles stood in their place, and a voice spoke in Ami's heart. Now you know how to call us when you need us. We will be here waiting until we are needed again.
Ami smiled as her brothers returned to the Lifestream. "We will need you again soon..." Her smile faded. "If Shinra is serious about getting to me."
Rude watched them go. "Thanks, clone boy." He looked at Ami. She looked back, and an understanding passed between them. Your brother saved my partner. I won't forget that too soon.
Ami beamed on Nikkole. "How does it feel to be free?"

nikky nodded... even though she could hardly agree with him, she wouldn't press the matter.
she looked at ami. ''i'm only free for a small period... kamen's master only used kamen....'' she grinned. ''this isn't over yet.... but for the time being.... yes. it feels good.''
